We have lots going on for the harp community here on the Causeway Coast. In addition to regular classes and workshops, we sometimes host visiting tutors to give specialised workshops in different aspects of harping. Our most recent event was a visit from Sophia Abraham, certified music therapist, who delivered a series of workshops on how the harp can be used in music therapy.
This was a wonderful opportunity of harpers of all abilities to learn about different ways to use their harp skills. Many of my pupils already play their harps in care settings, so it was wonderful to learn more about the skills required, the proven benefits of music therapy and to add new ideas to our repertoire.
Sophia also gave a workshop on how the harp might have been used in the bible. We enjoyed learning how to play in an ancient Hebrew mode and to learn how to play harp in worship settings.
It’s exciting for the harp community here to learn about the many different aspects of harp playing. There are so many opportunities for us to being life, joy and beauty to our communities through our harping. We hope to have Sophia back to visit us in the near future.
